Expanding terrestrial fiber networks for IP-connectivity requires long-term planning and huge investment. For those areas not (yet) connected to these fiber networks, or for those areas with only limited availability of fiber networks, satellite communication offers a flexible and fast solution for global IP-backbone connectivity. In addition, scalability of a satellite based solution reduces investment risk. Therefore, a simple or bi-directional backbone link via satellite is ideally suited for Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) or IP-carriers under these circumstance, either as their primary link or as a back-up link.
